Delightful Oaxaca Lodging Choices

Looking for a hotel in Oaxaca or a Oaxaca City rental? We stayed at some very different hotels in Oaxaca City, Mexico in the last several months.

Each one had lots of pluses; we'll review these Oaxaca lodging options here. Whether you'd like to be right in the center of everything, near the zocalo, or perhaps you're willing to walk a few blocks and stay in a more tranquil neighborhood of Oaxaca City; there are lots of hotels and B&Bs in Oaxaca to please you. The Posada Catarina is very inexpensive and has lots of pluses for the budget traveler, including a spacious roof deck with tables and chairs for snacking. The roof deck is full of flowers and makes a nice oasis for resting your tired feet after sightseeing at Monte Alban or visiting a craft village. The inner patios and walkways are hung with some very good paintings. We found the beds and pillows to be among the most comfortable we have ever slept on in Mexico. The Posada's location, near the Mercado Benito Juarez, is close enough to the zocalo; you can walk the few short blocks there easily. There is no restaurant inside the building, however, there are several within a block or two. We found the simple but hearty food in the hotel Rivera del Angel, around the corner at 518 Mina, to be carefully prepared and flavorful. The service was friendly, fast, and welcoming. The decor is very plain, but it's nice to hear & see the splashing in the pool outside the doors. Another good budget restaurant nearby is La Red, at the corner of Colon and Bustamente. It has good fresh seafood ( 'la Red' means 'the net'.) It was clearly very popular with Oaxacans and there were few tourists the nights we ate there. The Posada Catarina Hotel's internet access was in a spacious living room on the second floor. There was a small TV in the room and no AC, but a huge fan which was entirely sufficient. The room was fairly big, and had plenty of natural light and cross-ventilation from two windows. The only problem we encountered in our week's stay was two mornings when there were problems with the hot water. While the hotel staff was apologetic, they weren't able to remedy the issue before we had to go out for the day. Overall, the Posada Catarina was a bargain, and the roof patio was just a lovely feature of staying at this small hotel in Oaxaca.

Another Oaxaca hotel that we liked was the Hotel Mision de los Angeles. The rooms are set around central lawns with swimming pools. The plantings are lovely, and if you're on the second floor, your deck is a place to watch the colorful birds on the flowering trees right at eye level.
